A Linux Live CD/DVD – Must For Everyone!
I was unable to update this Blog for the past few days, as my Windows Operating System was under the effect of Trojan Crypt.Xdr.Gen.

I will not go into deep details about what was happening to my PC in this Blog, but you can read the whole problem in this Discussion Thread. My PC was in trouble and only dyne:bolic Live CD was helping me to stay online and transfer important data from infected partition to another partition. Now everything is fine!
This was the first time when I used Linux and really Linux helped me a lot in lessening my troubles. In this Post, I am mentioning some sources, from where you can get Linux Live CDs/DVDs for free.
Disaster can strike anytime, so it’s better to have a Linux Live CD/DVD with you always.
First of all what is Live CD/DVD:
A live CD or live DVD is a CD or DVD containing a bootable computer operating system. Live CDs are unique in that they have the ability to run a complete, modern operating system on a computer lacking mutable secondary storage, such as a hard disk drive. Live USB flash drives are similar to live CDs, but often have the added functionality of automatically and transparently writing changes back to their bootable medium.
Before using Live CD, make sure you must change your First Boot Device Priority to CD/DVD ROM from BIOS.
Following are the distros, which you can use as Live CD/DVD to boot your Computer:
- KNOPPIX: It’s is an Free Operating System based on Debian designed to be run directly from a CD / DVD, one of the first of its kind for any operating system. When starting a program it is loaded from the optical disc and decompressed into a RAM drive. The decompression is transparent and on-the-fly.
- Dyne:bolic: This is really a great distro, which has got the power of running your whole computer. Transfer your data, Surf the Net, Run USB Drives, Download/Upload files, Listen Music, See Videos etc. with this amazing distro. A must download for all. It’s free too!
- Ubuntu: Another must have Free Linux Distro with lots of functionality. Ubuntu is a community developed, Linux-based operating system that is perfect for laptops, desktops and servers. It contains all the applications you need – a web browser, presentation, document and spreadsheet software, instant messaging and much more.

Nothing mentioned about Puppy, Damn Small Linux or slax
. They are great portable distros(especially if your hardware resources are limited)
I haven’t mentioned about these as Unfortunately I haven’t tried them. BTW Here are the Links to the Distros you mentioned:
* Puppy Linux: http://www.puppylinux.org/
* Damn Small Linux: http://damnsmalllinux.org/
* SLAX: http://www.slax.org/
It’s very essential that everyone must read out the OS Guide before using them.
You can try linuxmint ( http://www.linuxmint.com/ ).
