If you are looking for an entry level CDMA Android Smartphone (NO GSM SUPPORT), this is the right phone for you. In spite of being an entry level Android Smartphone, this phone is a decent performer. It has a 3.14 inch Capacitive Touchscreen with TouchWiz UI.

This phone is 3G capable and supports CDMA EVDO Network. It has a decent 3.15 Mega Pixel camera with Autofocus, Geo-tagging and Smile detection. This phone only supports CDMA and runs on Android version 2.3 Gingerbread.

MTS MTag 3.1

MTS MTag 3.1 (Also known as Huawei C8511) is powered by a 600 MHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S1 Processor and runs on Android Version 2.2 Froyo. This Smartphone supports CDMA EVDO Network by MTS only. It has a 2.8 inch Capacitive Touchscreen which is pretty decent.

It has a 3.2 Mega Pixel camera with good picture quality. It has a 3.5 mm jack and Multi-format Audio/Video player. The most important thing to note is: This phone works only with MTS CDMA SIM/NETWORK (NO OTHER NETWORK IS SUPPORTED).

This phone has a 3 Mega Pixel camera and is powered by a 600 Mhz ARM Processor, which performs well.

• It runs on Android Version 2.2 Froyo
• 2.8 inch TFT LCD Touchscreen

Let’s check out in this post a short review on 3G (3rd Generation) Network of Vodafone India, its Internet Speed (Download and Upload) & Latency!

Before going further into this post, keep following things in mind:

• We used Samsung Galaxy S Plus (an Android powered Smartphone), which is capable of handling 3G Speed upto 14.4 Mbps (HSDPA); 5.76 Mbps (HSUPA), under HSDPA 900/1900/2100 3G Network.
• The test has been performed at Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.
• 3G Network strength and speed may vary in different cities and at different locations within same city!
• We are NOT comparing Vodafone 3G Network with AirTel 3G Network here!

Activating Vodafone 3G Network on your 3G Capable Mobile Phone/Tablet Device

For using Vodafone 3G, first you need to Activate 3G Services for your Mobile Number. In my case, I had to send following Text Message to 144, which is a Toll Free Number of Vodafone India:

ACT 3G

It may take upto 24 Hours for 3G Service Activation on your Mobile Number. As soon as 3G Services has been activated on your Mobile Number, you will get a confirmation SMS from Vodafone.

* The above Toll Free Number may vary for different cities/state OR can change in near future. It’s suggested that you should contact Vodafone Customer Care of your circle and ask them complete procedure for 3G Activation. Make sure to tell your Device Type/Model Number to Customer Care Executive for better assistance.

As soon as 3G services has been activated on your number, go to official website of Vodafone India and recharge your Mobile number with your preferred Vodafone 3G Pack.

Note:

• In my case, I didn’t received any separate settings for using Vodafone 3G Network. The only settings I have on my Samsung Galaxy S Plus is the default Vodafone GPRS Setting and 3G Service is working on this perfectly. – For appropriate GPRS/3G settings for your 3G capable device, you should directly contact Vodafone Customer Care.
• Postpaid users need to contact Vodafone Customer Care for getting details on available 3G Packs. Activation procedure can be completely different for Postpaid Customers of Vodafone India.
• You can also recharge your Number with 3G Pack by going to nearest Retailer/Mobile Recharge Shop.

Setting up your Mobile/Tablet Device to work with Vodafone 3G

Following are the Network Modes available in Samsung Galaxy S Plus for Packet Data Transfer from Mobile Network:

• GSM/WCDMA (auto mode)
• GSM Only
• WCDMA Only

In my case, WCDMA only mode worked perfectly with Vodafone 3G Network, as there were Constant Disconnection and Re-connection with the Network whenever GSM/WCDMA (auto mode) is selected! If you experience connection problems with your Device, try switching to some other Network Mode.

* In Android, Network Mode can be accessed by going to Settings from Home Screen >> Wireless and Network >> Mobile Networks >> Network Mode. In case, you are using some other Operating System, it’s recommended to consult the Device Manual.

You are Now ready to access Vodafone 3G Network on your 3G capable Mobile/Tablet Device!

Internet Speed Test Result for Vodafone India 3G Network

The Maximum Download Speed I got using Vodafone 3G Network is 4.06 Mbps, while the Maximum Upload Speed I got is around 1.20 Mbps:

Following is the Internet Speed Test results chart for successive speed tests with Vodafone India 3G Network:

As you can see in the above chart, a nominal speed which you can expect from Vodafone India 3G Network in 3.50+ Mbps, provided that 3G Network strength is maximum for your device and there’s NO/Less Network congestion.

Latency (PING) for Vodafone India 3G Network

As you can see in the above chart, the latency for Vodafone India 3G Network ranges from 80ms to 100ms. The above chart shows the Ping from my location in Bhopal to Speed Test Server located at Mumbai. The good thing is, the Speed Test Server is hosted by Vodafone India at Mumbai!

Overall I will give Vodafone India 3G Network 9 out of 10, based on 3G Speed, Network Performance, Latency and Ease of use/Activation Procedure.

Important Notes:

• 3G Speed/Strength also depends on the type of Device/Adapter you are using for connecting with the network.
• 3G Speed will also depend on Network congestion/traffic! You may get less download speed during peak hours (day time), when lots of other people are using the same network.
• Connection with Vodafone 3G Network is constant and doesn’t breaks at all. But, if you are travelling in a fast car/train, the connection may drop/break eventually.
• There may be additional ROAMING Charges for using/activating 3G Network Services – It’s better to get details from Vodafone Customer Care on this
• Contact Vodafone Customer Care or visit Vodafone India Website, in case you have any doubts OR want to know more details on Vodafone 3G.

How to Install Spool on your Mobile Phone/Tablet Device and PC Browser?

1. If you are using an Android powered Smartphone/Tablet Device, than you can install Spool from Android Market using THIS LINK. And, if you are using iPhone/iPad which are iOS powered devices, than you need to install Spool from iTunes using THIS LINK

2. Once the application has been installed on your Mobile Phone/Tablet Device, create your personalized Spool Account from within the Application or simply connect/authorize your existing Twitter/Facebook Account with Spool.

How to Save/Download Videos & Web Pages on Android and iOS Device for Offline viewing/usage?

Suppose you want to download THIS YouTube! Video OR THIS Page for Offline viewing/usage. Open these pages in Web Browser of your PC and hit the Spool Icon. You will get following message just below the Spool Icon:

Hit the Spool it! Button and the page whose content you want to download to your Mobile/Tablet Device will be sent to Spool Servers/your Spool Account. Once the request has been completed, you will get following confirmation message:

Now, open the Spool Application on your Mobile/Tablet Device and the content of your requested page will start downloading automatically on your Device. Once the download has been completed, you can read/watch your requested content in Offline mode anytime and anywhere!

Additional Notes/Features:

1. Once Spool has been successfully installed on your Android/iOS powered Mobile Device, you can add pages/content to your Spool Account by using Add to Spool option present in Mobile Web Browser. Add to Spool option can be normally found in the Share Menu of your Browser. For Example, Open the default Web Browser in Android and Go to Menu > More > Share Page > Add to Spool:

So who’s right? The terminal emulation geeks will tell you that having the Windows workflow module in a smartphone enables you to use it with more open applications and to do more stuff on it all at once – hence, presumably, making it a more rounded work tool and something more like a computer.

The practical minded corporate worker, on the other hand (that would be the one who didn’t buy a Windows Phone when it came out and isn’t buying them now either), will point out that a smart phone is not a device on which a person is supposed to work. You do work on computers, laptops and PCs. You use a smart phone for communication, for connecting with the office network and for facilitating work – but no one in their right mind would use a device the size of a TV remote controller in the same way they use their laptop.

A Windows terminal emulator on a PC is fine – it helps you use your computer in the Windows environment even when you’re not technically running Windows. That’s grand for offices that have more than one type of computer in their network – design companies and media companies, for example, which both use a lot of Apple technology in their workflow. But on a mobile device, unless it’s an iPad, I can’t really see the point.

I suppose if you were a business owner looking to spread the load on your database by having travelling employees fill in some spare train time by entering data on their mobile devices, you’d be one up by using Windows terminal emulation.

There is one clear benefit to the Windows terminal emulator for a mobile device – which is that it should enable you to access company databases from your phone in the same way that you would on a laptop connected to an extranet. The terminal emulator allows the system to plug into your phone as though it were a laptop – so if you’re a sales person or need some basic information in a hurry while you are out of the office, you can connect yourself into the net in that fashion.

Even then I am still not sure how much the use of a Windows terminal emulator on a smart phone would be worth the cost of licensing and installing the App. I suppose in time and cost terms, it costs less for a company to have its sales force directly access the database than to phone up the office and ask someone else to do it. The time spent by the sales person is probably about the same – calling someone up and having them read figures off a screen at you takes the same amount of time as tapping a screen and doing it yourself – but the time spent by the office employee is saved.

Where you do need to use a terminal emulator, Windows terminal emulators are considered best practice for the simple reason that they can be used on a very large number of systems. For consulting and net support purposes, a Windows terminal emulator means that you have around 80% of the available systems on the market there on your phone.

In fact it is in the area of network engineering and support that Windows terminal emulation comes into its own. Used as a handy diagnostic device, a mobile fitted with a Windows terminal emulator allows a technician to forestall problems quicker and often fix them onsite, rather than waiting for a return to base to sort the problem out.
