Recently India got her new currency symbol for Indian Rupee:

This particular symbol for Indian Rupee was finalized on 15 July 2010 by Indian Cabinet and is designed by D Udaya Kumar, an assistant professor at IIT Guwahati. During the Union Budget 2010, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee mentioned that the new Rupee symbol would reflect and capture the Indian ethos and culture.

Recently Mangalore based Foradian Technologies Pvt. Ltd. has created a new Rupee Font for computer users. This way computer users can easily insert the New Rupee Symbol in any Document/Application. The company is constantly redefining the new Rupee Font and these updates are posted on Foradian Technologies Official Blog on a regular basis:

The Indian government will try to adopt the sign within next six months in the country and globally within 18 to 24 months. The Indian Rupee sign is currently in the first stage of proposal for being encoded into the Unicode character set, as a sign distinct from the existing Generic Rupee Symbol Rs currently encoded at U+20A8.
