There are lots of sites which contains Active Threats like Viruses, Trojans, NSFW (Not Safe For Work) content etc. You will only discover these after you actually land into such Sites. So it’s better to scan all the Search Engine Results in seconds.

AVG Anti-Virus and Security Products features a LinkScanner which will scan all the Links provided by Search Engines. Following is an official description of LinkScanner as taken from AVG FAQs:

LinkScanner is a new security component which provides the Search-Shield and Active Surf-Shield functionality. Its purpose is to scan all results of the supported Internet search engines (Yahoo!, Google, MSN), and provide you with an evaluation of a safety level of each found website. At the same time, the LinkScanner also checks all Internet addresses typed into the address bar of your browser, or linked on other websites.

While browsing the Internet, Active-Surf-Shield protects you against any threats hidden within the websites upon their direct visit, even if the website itself is not yet known to be malicious, and its address is not blocked by Search-Shield.

Basically Google will notify you if you are going to land into a malicious website. As soon as you search with Google and if Google feels that a particular website is going to harm your Computer, than just below the Site name you can see a Warning This site may harm your computer:

this-site-may-harm-your-computer

If still you click on the Link, you will get following advisory message from Google:

this-site-mayharm-your-computer-google

All major search engines notifies the user in their search results, if they are going to visit any harmful website.

If you use Firefox, than Firefox will tell you about Harmful Websites with a warning of Reported Web Forgery:

But sometimes Firefox, Google and other Search Engines do not provide accurate results and here AVG LinkScanner comes into Picture.

Let’s clear the functioning of LinkScanner with Examples:

I searched for the Term Microsoft in Google and got the following Results Page, in which all Links (Results) are marked with Green (Click to Enlarge):

Green means the site is completely safe to surf with NO Active Threats within it. Now what AVG LinkScanner says in the Green Box is as follows:

avg-link-scanner-safe-site

AVG LinkScanner will tell you the IP Address of the site it marked as Safe, along with the Scanning Date + Time.

Now lets see what happens to the Sites Containing Active Threats. I searched for the term Warez in Google and got the following Results Page in which almost all Links (Results) are marked with Red (Click to Enlarge):

Red means the site is dangerous to surf and may harm your computer. Now what AVG LinkScanner says in the Red Box is as follows:
